Tom Daugherty

Tom is a recent graduate from Kent State University with a B.A. in Music, studying with David Mitchell, and a certificate in Teaching English as a Foreign Language. He currently performs on Euphonium with The Sounds of Sousa Band and various community bands around Northeast Ohio. His previous performances include Kent State’s Wind Ensemble, local musicals, community performances, and a New Music concert at Kent State featuring guest composer/clinician David Gillingham.

Woodwinds

Michelle Murray

Michelle Murray is a 2010 graduate of Youngstown State University with a degree in Music Education. She teaches private flute, saxophone, and clarinet lessons at Daybreak Music as well as around Mahoning County. Michelle's students have received excellent and superior ratings at OMEA Solo and Ensemble Contest the last 6 years and have been selected to perform with the OMEA District 5 Honors Band. Michelle is the current assistant marching band director at Newton Falls and has also worked with music and band programs around the Northeast Ohio. She performs regularly with the Cortland Community Band on flute and piccolo and as a freelance artist across the tri-county area.

 

Mike Oleska

Mike Oleska studied at the Navy School of Music and Youngstown state University’s Dana School of Music. Mike has taught at Daybreak Music for two years and has been teaching woodwind instruments for thirty years. He toured for seven years with a show band and toured Europe with the USO. Mike has worked with many different groups as a freelance musician, including the Art Mooney Orchestra, Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra, jazz singer Nancy Wilson, Deana Martin, Tommy Tune, Crewcuts, and the Cordettes. Locally Mike is a member of Easy Street Productions, Don Burns Big Band, and Nostalgia. Many of Mike’s students are known to win school auditions, and are selected to play in honors bands.

 

Steve Chambers

Retiring from teaching in 2016, Mr. Chambers was employed by the Boardman Schools for 32 years serving as director of bands at Boardman Center Middle School and assistant band director at Boardman High School and Glenwood Middle School. He also taught band and choir at East Palestine High School. A native of Hamilton, Ohio, Mr. Chambers received a Bachelor of Music Education Degree from The Ohio State University. He received his master's degree in Music Education from Kent State University. He has also done additional graduate work at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, the University of Akron, and Youngstown State University. As a performing musician, Mr. Chambers has played with the W.D. Packard Concert Band and several other area groups.
 

Brass

Bill Hrusovsky

Bill is a graduate of Kent State University where he studied under Harry Herforth. His playing accreditations include The Warren Concert Band and The Youngstown Symphonic Band under Paul Rossi where he played for twenty plus years. Bill has performed with the Lowellville Mount Carmel Band for twenty plus years and is a founding member of Guys Without Ties and continues to perform with the band. Bill has been at Daybreak Music for nine years and has been teaching brass instruments for 12 years.

 

Alan Purdum

Alan Purdum has been minister of music at Howland Community Church since 1973. He is retired from teaching at Grand Valley Schools where he taught elementary music and marching band, and is an instructor for Orff Schulwerk (Music and Movement Education) teacher-training classes at Baldwin Wallace University. Alan is a member of the Rosewood Consort (early music ensemble), and plays bass with the Greenville Symphony and the Pittsburgh Philharmonic. He participates in community theatre as an actor and musician; and is a freelance bagpiper.

He has studied tuba with John Turk (YSU) and John Krauss (Mount Union), and studied voice with Dr. Wade Raridon (YSU) and Dr. Patricia Boehm (Mount Union). He also studied Choral Conducting with Dr. Scott Dorsey (Mount Union), Dr. CM Shearer (KSU), and Dr. Scott McPherson (KSU). Andrew spent 12 years teaching music, directing choirs, musicals, and plays in the public schools. He has also been a church musician for 16 years and currently serves as Minister of music at Howland Community Church.
